Updates

Dear Kindergarten Families,
Please don't forget that NWEA/MAP testing starts tomorrow. We have a reading test on Monday and Tuesday followed by math tests on Wednesday and Thursday. It is very important that your child gets a great night of sleep, breakfast in the morning and to school on time. Our testing time is at 9:15 so it is very important that we have our regular morning routine before we go to the computer lab.
I talked to the students about this but we will have a tentative party on Friday to celebrate our accomplishments with testing. We discussed in class how important it is to not click around like the test is a game, to think hard, try our best and to go slow. We don't want to be the first person done with the test. If we do those things, we will have a small celebration put on by myself and Ms. Lindsay.
You will be getting the field trip permission slip home tomorrow in Monday mailers. Please sign and send the money back with the slip ASAP.
Here's to a great week and successful testing!
Ms. Demsky

Bossy "R

We have been talking about letter blends (when two letter are put together and make a new sound). When making a list of words that had "br" "dr" and "cr", the students were listing words that included the bossy "r". Bossy "r" is when the r changes the vowel and often you can't hear the vowel sound. Below is a cute video to explain all about bossy "r".

Seeds Seeds and More Seeds

First of all, you are amazing parents not only to your students but to your child's teacher! Thank you to those of you that donated produce to help us learn about seeds. We had a blast predicting whether the piece of produce had one or many seeds inside. Lots of laughs in our classroom today.

Synonyms

Ms. Chef visited our classroom this morning with "cinnamon" rolls aka synonym rolls. We learned that words can mean the same thing and brainstormed some ourselves!

St. Patrick's Day!

We had so much fun Monday! That sneaky leprechaun came on the weekend and made our room crazy! Please enjoy the pictures.

We had vanilla pudding for snack. The trick was we added blue and yellow food coloring to it! To our surprise... we had GREEN pudding.

Lucky Charms graphing.

3-D Shapes

We are learning 3-d shapes. Here is a cool and catchy video we enjoy in class!

Hunk and Chunk Chants

You may be reading with your student and all of a sudden.... they start singing this crazy chant that tells you what sound certain letter chunks make. Here is a picture of the ones we have worked on so far. Below you can find the "Chants" we use.

"Ch" C-H (sound sound sound) C- H (sound sound sound)

"Sh" S-H (sound sound sound) S-H (sound sound sound)

"Th" This is a thorn and this is a thistle. T-H (sound sound sound)

"Ow" O-W (sound) There's a cow going down, D-O-W-N. That's the way we get down- YEAH!

"Ou" O-U (sound) O-U-T O-U-T Get out of here you bumblebee (sound) (sound)

"Ing" Let's do the king of the 'ing' dance (fingers in the air) (sound sound sound sound sound)

"All" A-L-L all. Throw that ball (sound sound sound sound sound)

"OO" (house picture these are called the sweeties because of the sound it makes) O-O (sound) I love school! (sound sound sound sound sound)

"OO" (Hook picture, these are called the bully brothers because the sound it makes sounds like bullies pushing people with their elbows) O-O (sound) Captain Hook is a bully brother (sound sound sound sound sound).

Fact families

Below is a picture posted of a fact family "house". We have been working on this concept. We can make four problems using the three numbers in the roof. I colored coated this house to help some of the students out (it could help with your clarity too). Check on your student's progress this weekend :).

Juicy Words = Details

As I said in many of your conferences, we have been working on adding juicy words to our stories we write. Please encourage this at home going forward with journal entries.

Fact Families

In math we are working on fact families. The first picture is the example and students worked in groups to solve their problems.

The Pied Piper of Hamelin

We watched a short musical/play this week. Ask your student if they remember what "pied" means (Hint: it's colors or colorful). They even used some of our second grade friends to participate in the acting!
